Today, Pedro lives with his wife Cristina and their 2 children and they are all vegetarian. They do feel lucky to share the same core values and they are willing to take that extra effort to reduce their footprint togehter. With a family with small children, it can be a big exercise of awareness as well as in organisation.

 

 

They manage to find sustainable solutions and to combine those with traditional values and ways of living as well as frugality. They do so by reducing their use of disposable products as much as they can, and to go back to reusable things such as diapers, handkerchiefs, bags, packaging and razors for shaving. They also make a lot of their own things from scratch like yoghurts, soya/almond/rice milk, cleaning detergent, personal care products and vegetables. Other solutions include reusing their bathing water (grey water) for plants and toilet, composting organic waste, line drying the clothes, and even in how they chose their apartment. The way the windows face is an important factor for sun exposure and heat.

 

 

Pedro is very passionate about protecting traditional trade in Porto, in his work as an eco-social tour guide and in his personal life. He does much of his shopping with local traditional shops for many reasons. The quality is often better, the people working in the shop know where the product comes from, from which farmer or supplier, and there is more trust or personal relations built between the customer and shop owner. On a microeconomic level, money is more likely to stay within the community, and small scale producers have a better chance of selling their products in these small shops. Often there is more variation in the products, and it is simply a nicer experience.
